Most types of roses are native to Asia. The rose was probably first cultivated in China in 500 BC. Currently, more than 30 thousand rose varieties are known!
The world's smallest rose was won by Indian resident Sudhir Khetavat. The variety is called Si. The size of the bud of this rose is a little more than 5 millimeters.
For years, breeders have crossed roses of different colors in an attempt to create the seemingly impossible light blue rose. Roses do not contain the pigment needed to produce a blue color. Finally, in 2009, as a result of genetic engineering, the first light blue variety in the world was obtained.
The rose is the national flower of England. Here it gained prominence during the War of the Red and White Roses (1455-1485). The Tudor Rose, which is the result of a union between the emblems of the House of Lancaster (the red rose) and the House of York (the white rose), who were at war with each other.
The most expensive variety of roses is called Juliet. This David Austin masterpiece was grown in 2006. The breed took a total of 15 years to create and cost $4.37 million.
The world's largest rose was grown by Nikita K. Rulhoksofsky from California. The diameter of the flower was 84 cm!
